Tradition!

Tradition!

Fiddler on the Roof, is a beloved musical about a humble Jewish family living in a Russian village in the early 20th century. The main character is Tevye, a milkman, and father of three daughters. One of the most iconic quotes from the musical is Tevye’s famous line, “Tradition, Tradition!” The exclamation embodies the central theme of the work and emphasizes the importance of holding onto traditions in an ever-changing world.
When we think of Estes Park, the word “tradition” may not be top of mind. Words like mountains, elk, outdoor adventure, Rocky Mountain National Park, beauty, fun, wildlife, taffy or t-shirts may come to mind. However, the word tradition is as central to the story of Estes Park as it is to Fiddler on the Roof. For over a century, Estes Park has been woven into the fabric of family and friend traditions from people all over the country. Generation upon generation have created magical mountain memories through their repeated trips to Estes Park. Recently, one of our longest visiting customers passed away, after spending every summer but two in Estes Park for over 90 years. Her children and grandchildren are carrying on the tradition and will pass the legacy of love of this place onto the next generation. This is one example of many. From anniversaries, to honeymoons, family reunions, annual trips, girls’ weekends, and church camps, Estes Park beckons people back again and again.
Today, we celebrate the tradition of nearly 70 women from Kansas who have made an annual hiking pilgrimage to Estes Park part of their DNA. These enthusiastic and adventurous ladies from the group “Women Hiking Kansas and Beyond” spend a week hiking the trails of RMNP every fall. This is their 5th annual trip and we are delighted to have them in town. They bring with them a love for hiking, a respect for the great outdoors, and a big heart for Estes Park.
You see, these mountains may be magnificent, but honestly, they pale in comparison to the beautiful people who choose to visit us. Like with everything in life, it’s all about people. People make the place! To all who have faithfully supported Estes Park year after year, we thank you! You give us purpose and you are our passion. “Women Hiking KS and Beyond,” thank you for reminding us about the value of timeless traditions in a crazy world.
