Winter activities in Estes Park are dependent on the weather. If you are going hiking, it is wise to have traction devices. Traction devices (spikes or chains for your boots) cost about $40. There are a few stores in town that have traction devices for rent (Estes Park Mountain Shop, Kirk's Flyshop, and Outdoor World). Depending on the length of your hike, snowshoes may be necessary. Snowshoes can also be rented in town. When hiking in the winter, remember that the wind can be fierce. It may be calm in town but very windy in the National Park. Layer up and be prepared for strong winds. For typical visitors, we recommend approximately a six mile or less round-trip hike for snowshoeing. Some of our favorite snowshoe hikes are:
